This blog post was sent to me because I am quoted but it is rich with enlightening information and common-sense strategies that would make it a great handout for staff and families. See what wisdom mom Karen Wang has to share here: http://blog.friendshipcircle.org/2011/12/13/26-sensory-integration-tools-for-meltdown-management/

Words of wisdom as they pertain to autism:
I hear and I forget.
I see and I know.
I do and I understand.

I have been most negligent about posting blogs, as anyone can see by the disparity between this date and the last. However, I am in semi-retirement mode and have been distracted by other projects. I will apologize in advance for what will likely be another lengthy lapse before my next post.
In any event, I was made aware of one mom's online blog in which she described our meeting at Desales University last Friday; I thought some readers might appreciate the validations she received for what her mother's heart was already guiding her to do: http://aspergersandpickles.blogspot.com/2011/10/morning-with-william-stillman.html

I love stories about shifting attitudes and powerful transformations. Here's one mom's account, inspired by Autism and the God Connection, as published in Psychology Today: www.psychologytoday.com/blog/shut-about-your-perfect-kid/201106/looking-autism-the-other-side

In my spiritually-themed books, I have predicted that, within the next generation, the rate of autism will escalate to one in 10 children. Curiously, On May 9, the New York Times published an article about a recent study in South Korea that suggests their research for autism statistics is flawed, and their rates of incidence are closer to one in 38 children. Our future societies may become increasingly diverse and very interesting as this trajectory continues to play out. I hope we can see this shift as the opportunity that it is.
I'm pleased to announce that my book, Empowered Autism Parenting, has been voted to be an award-winning finalist in the 2011 Indie Book Awards. Many thanks to all who have written to validate its message.
Finally, Nancy Nowell, an old friend and colleague, has addressed the growing need for sex education materials tailored to our adolescents and young adults on the autism spectrum through a unique series of videos and curriculum materials that are absolutely necessary and invaluable to parents, caregivers, and educators. In addition to being a certified Sexuality Educator, Nancy is a longtime advocate for people with different ways of being. Please check out her Social Signals educational materials at www.socialsignalsed.com.

Two books, both by authors on the autism spectrum, of which I'd like to make everyone aware. The first is Atypical: Life with Asperger's in 20-1/3 Chapters by Jesse Saperstein, a brilliantly-written memoir that is insightful, funny, and wholly self-deprecating as any good memoir should be. I highly recommend this worthwhile read. Learn more about Jesse at www.jessesaperstein.com.
Next, a children's book with terrific pictures (illustrated by Jeffrey Duckworth) is The Day They Sold the Moon by nine-year-old Jack Paschall. I haven't yet had the opportunity to read Jack's book (sent to me by his grandma from Texas) but I love the look of it and it is based on a series of dialogues told by Jack to his mother at bedtime. For more information about Jack, his book, and his own inspired art work, go to www.daytheysoldthemoon.com.
These authors are proof-positive that not only is there a market for people with autism to contribute something of value to the publishing world, there's also unlimited potential when we recognize gifts and talents, and build upon unique and individual passions.

In keeping with Autism Awareness Month, New Page Books, publisher of The Soul of Autism and The Autism Prophecies, has posted a guest blog reflecting my thoughts on "autism awareness" and just who should be aware of autism. It is very important to assess each individual's gifts and talents, and to nurture and cultivate their passions as bridges to other learning opportunities; the development of meaningful relationships (including romance); and as future vocations. Yesterday's "Glenn Beck" program on FOX News hosted young Jacob Barnett who is the epitome of "presuming intellect," especially as his parents were led to foresee only his limitations when he was diagnosed with autism at age two. And, in a validating acknowledgment, Mr. Beck gifts a copy of Autism and the God Connection to the family. See the complete segment here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=hBW4S9xcTOk

Word of another translation, this time it's my 2009 book, Empowered Autism Parenting, which is being published in Greek. The cover is shown below.

Overseas followers of my work may be interested to learn of two new translations. The Soul of Autism: Looking Beyond Labels to Unveil Spiritual Secrets of the Heart Savants has just been published in Russian language by Ves Publishing. Further information may be found at www.vesbook.ru. The same title will also have its German translation premiere in August through publisher Amra Verlag. See www.amraverlag.de for details.

Greetings to all for the new year. I am blessed and privileged to do what I do, and I am grateful for the validations I receive from people who have attended my presentations, or who have discovered my books. Just this week, for two consecutive days, I've had communications that affirm my purpose in life.
One read, "Thank you for saving my life. I had given up on myself when I came across your book. I am now going to try to find help. I can't thank you enough." Another read, "I have finally been set free after reading your books...Now I understand my life...For the first time in my life I can breathe the clean fresh air of, well, me."
Thank you all for your kind and loving support; it is the nourishment that sustain me. Here's to good and great things in 2011!
